Maker Faire 2012

Maker Faire 2012 Maker Faire 2012 is this weekend. If you read these blogs, you probably already know what Maker Faire is, but if you dont its basically a huge convention/fair of creative people getting together to show off the cool stuff they make. (Sponsored by Make magazine, of course.) Theres an Arduino section, a 3D printer section, there will be robots walking around chilling, and there will be a 6,500 sq/ft 50,000 lbs life size replica of Mousetrap the board game. Rather than have me add 25 hyperlinks to that very exciting sentence above, just go here. Now, heres an another important point to mention: MIT Dean of Admissions, Stu Schmill will be there! Oh yeah, its got everything. In addition to all of the exhibits, workshops and competitions, Maker Faire also has an impressive list of interesting presenters speaking on a large range of topics. Heres the schedule. Dean Schmills got a very nice presentation planned called, Preparing for College: Whats a Maker To Do? Its on Sunday at 3:00 pm. You can see it on the schedule here. In the movie, â€Å"Me, Myself Irene†, the main character, Charlie Baileygates, played by Jim Carrey, is diagnosed with a split personality, also known as dissociative identity disorder. What that means is, at some point in the movie, he develops a second personality, and that personality goes by the name of Hank. Through out the movie, viewers are able to see the symptoms of someone with DID, and see how it can affect their daily life. Usually dissociative identity disorder develops when a person is very stressed in childhood, or undergoes some type of abuse, sexual or physical. The DSM states the primary characteristic of the disorder is when there is an existence of more than one distinct identity or personality within a person. The neighbor took his paper, and then asked Charlie to just get a new one at work, Charlie tensed up some before being able to shrug it off and suck it down. Charlie’s friends even take advantage of how nice he is. They always make him the root of their jokes. When Charlie asks a barber shop owner to move his illegally parked car, the owner laughs at him and just throws him the keys to the car and tells him to move it himself. The whole town takes advantage of Charlie though, not only his friends. In the supermarket a woman asks to cut in front of him inline and then ends up having a cart full of groceries. This is Charlies breaking point. He starts tensing up, you can tell something is happening. All of a sudden he starts talking in a different voice, and finds vagaclean in the woman’s cart that cut in front of him. So to take his anger out on her he gets on the store microphone and announces she has vagaclean in her cart. We learn this new personalities name when he is drowning a young girl in the water fountain who disobeyed him earlier. When the girl says she is going to tell her father on him, he announces that he is Hank. Stem cell research is a controversial topic and this paper will talk about both sides of the controversy. The controversy started back in 1998 when the first successful culturing of human embryonic stem cells was performed. The research surrounding stem cells has been the center of a huge debate mainly because of ethics and morals. A stem cell is an immature cell (not a full human yet) that has the potential to become specialized into different types of cells throughout the body. There are two basic types of stem cells: adult stems cells and embryonic stem cells. For this paper the embryonic stem cells will be talked about and they are produced when a newly fertilized egg begins to divide. These embryonic cells come from embryo’s that are between 3-5 days old. Embryonic stem cells come from fertilized eggs grown in laboratories which are used for stem cell research or from invitro-fertilization clinics from eggs that were never implanted in a woman. We constantly see fathers taking care of their families as well; cleaning, cooking, and going grocery shopping. Also, women today work full time to take responsibility in the family, not just men. As a scholar, I see the differences in family dynamics in several ways. Certain gender roles have changed, but are still there. For example, in the episode The Perfect Father, Ward tries his hardest to compete with Mr. Dennison in who is the better father when he realizes his children are spending more time at his house (Leave It To Beaver). In todays society, we see fathers always competing with other fathers in everything that they do; wether it is sports, the working world, or with their children. Although some of these gender role changes are not meant to be a bad thing, it is important to see that it takes the effort of two to create a respectful, perfect family structure. Maybe even someday in the near future, women and men will not be defined by their gender, but sometimes it is necessary for a mother to take on domestic roles, and a father to take on masculine roles. What people do not really understand is the meaning of family: no matter what roles the mother or father take on, how early a couple decides to start a family, how many children a married couple decides to have, or where to live its about family love and the happiness it brings.
